Public Enquiry

© StonehengeSolutionAfter many years of debate, a Public Inquiry took place in 2004 to examine plans to remove traffic on the busy A303 which bisects the World Heritage Site containing Stonehenge.

The official £192m plan proposes to route the traffic through a 2.1Km tunnel under the present position of the A303 where it passes Stonehenge. The ACT fully supports the aim of removing traffic from this site but objects to the way in which the official tunnel scheme achieves its objective.

What are the objections?

ACT is concerned that the £192 million expenditure on the official scheme is not cost effective for the taxpayer. It will irretrievably damage archaeology and the short tunnel will not completely remove heavy traffic from the site.

A more detailed treatment of the ACT objections submitted to the Public Inquiry is available on this site. More >>

What is the solution?

The ACT Stonehenge A303 Realignment PlanThe ACT has a solution to both the traffic problems of South Wiltshire and those of the World Heritage Site.

The ACT Stonehenge A303 Realignment Plan is a simple proposal to connect a long-awaited Salisbury bypass to the A303 east of Amesbury. The plan: -

  • Removes all through traffic from the Stonehenge site.
  • Provides a Salisbury bypass.
  • Provides a bypass for the villages on the A36 in the Wylye valley.
  • Provides a bypass for the villages on the A338 in the Bourne valley.
